The Core Work of the Retreat

T
he retreat is more than a writing workshop. The weave of writing, creativity and ritual allows us to experience ourselves as creative women writers unfettered by our Inner Critics. As this happens, the writing deepens and we open to the passion of our Inner Writers, and the stories we need to tell. This is a journey into the light and shadows of our creative unconscious. It is a passionate journey that explores writing as the song of the soulTM. This journey is filled with expectations and the excitement of the unknown; challenging and joyful, it is ultimately a journey of transformation.

"This writing retreat was an amazing gift for my Inner Writer, one that validated her existence and pushed her to stretch herself beyond the lines and boundaries that have been allowed to grow around her. She learned a lot, not just about the techniques of writing but also about the creative process."

                                                     ~ Sandya Nankani

Each day, we share a three hour writing workshop. Our critiquing is supportive and motivating. If a piece works, why? If a piece doesn't work, what might make it better? We learn how to "mine" first draft material for the "jewels" that hold the heat of the story. We explore the "what ifs" and "what happens next" of story telling and character development, structure, how plot emerges from character and other techniques relevant to the short story, novel and fictionalized non-fiction.

We explore the creative process through guided imagery, interviewing characters, music, yoga and other techniques Emily has developed to both further your stories and access the passion of the creative unconscious.

Ritual is transforming. It makes the intangible tangible and is both a deeply personal and a communal experience that connects the individual to something greater than self. Ritual is particularly important for the creative person who is at home with the mysteries that are revealed through the language of dreams, symbols, images, colors, rhythms and the senses. This is writing as a spiritual journey
