Everyone who
comes to me for help, whether it be in workshops, on retreats or in private sessions,
has at least one thing in common: a desire to write. Many have originally doubted
his or her own talent, but I've found that undiscovered talent usually accompanies
the desire, although in a fragile form. Still, writing successful fiction draws
on more than just talent and desire. Three additional resources are needed:
-
Skill
in the craft of writing fiction -
Motivation
to keep going when the going gets tough -
Creative
processes that encourage
your plot and character to flow from your unconscious onto the page.
My teaching,
which is based on a two pronged method of honing craft and unleashing creativity,
gives writers the skills, motivation, and processes to begin their journeys into
the unknown. It is here, in the unknown, that you uncover the exciting, passionate
characters who make your stories come alive. This is quite different from many
writing teachers, who put emphasis on words and structure without leading their
students into their creative unconscious. Although words and structure are crucial
to fiction writing, a great story demands far more.
Once you have
a character who takes hold, the writing magically becomes better. Then learning
technique is a natural part of the writing process, and not just an intellectual
exercise.
