My Experiences as a Retreat Leader and Writing Coach
Books by Emily
have been teaching and guiding other creative people on such journeys
for over thirty years. During that time, I have been a keen observer of
my own writing and the effect that the creative process has on all
aspects of my life. My Two-pronged Method of Coaching: Teaching Craft and Unleashing Creative Passion! The Five Ingredients of the Scene is a method that I have developed over more than thirty years of coaching. This simple yet effective method takes the mystery out of creating characters and developing the story line. However, craft alone cannot unlock the mystery of writing. Unleashing your passion is the magic ingredient. Even when you think that your writing is worthless, creative passion will keep you writing!
Unleashing your creativity can be the most challenging aspect of our work together. It is also the most rewarding. Passion is the key, and I know how to unleash it in you. Developing the writer in you — whether you are a beginner, have been writing for a while, or have books published —is what I do best.
As the palette of my creativity widened, I understood, at a visceral level, that creativity is not limited to the arts. Rather, creativity is a path from which the journey of life is explored and its fullness embraced. This is the wellspring of my eighteen years leading Writing, Creativity and Ritual Retreats.
I have been writing fiction all my life and have 7 works of fiction published, ranging from children's books to adult novels, including Petersburg, which reached the Best Seller's list in England. In addition, my book, The Art of Fiction Writing or How to Fall Down the Rabbit Hole Without Really Trying, explores how to defang your inner critic so you can write from the passionate core of the writer in you.
I hold writing workshops in my home in Yorktown Heights, NY and also via conference calls on the telephone. I have written many articles on creativity and the creative process, and have been published in Writer's Digest.
My own spiritual journey includes extensive work in personal transformation. I have worked with spiritual and shamanic mentors and healers in the US, England and Peru.
History of the Retreat
The retreat has been an annual event since 1998 and has been held in several places over the years, finally finding its home in my new house on the rocky coast of Bar Harbor, Maine.
Whether in Maine, South Carolina, Italy, England, New Mexico or Montana, the setting is chosen for its beauty, comfort, food and most of all, its nurturing of the creative spirit.
